Earlier today during a press conference where he primarily addressed the economy, President Obama made some surprising statements on a CIA report expected to be released in the coming days. The president acknowledged that the United States “tortured some folks”. Of course, that the United States government tortured people, particularly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 is not surprising, rather it’s pretty much common knowledge. However, whenever high level officials speak about torture, the topic is often sugar-coated, as they would use such terms as “enhanced interrogation tactics.” With Obama being the first President to acknowledge the fact that this country has tortured, I wonder what the implications of that admission will be. Will charges get filed against Bush administration officials for war crimes? The president said early on that he wouldn’t pursue charges. But only time will tell what will ultimately happen, especially if Congressional Democrats lead the charge.
